"Cultivating a lush future, one tree at a time: Our association pioneers agroforestry development in the Mediterranean."
At the intersection between agriculture and forestry, food production and nature conservation, lies agroforestry - the combination of trees, crops and/or livestock, and people.
Scientific data shows that agroforestry has a positive impact on the soil - increasing soil biodiversity and reducing soil erosion; the crops - fixing nitrogen and other nutrients; the animals - providing feed and shelter; livelihoods - providing food, medicine and income diversification; and the atmosphere - sequestrating carbon dioxide.
While agroforestry is widely present in environmental and agricultural policies, its implementation in the Mediterranean is limited. However, agroforestry is part of the Mediterranean cultural heritage and can serve both as mitigation and adaptation measure to combat climate change. This is of foremost importance in the Mediterranean bioregion, a territory that is both a biodiversity hotspot and under high climatic threat!
Based on this observation, we created AgroForMed, a non-profit association that aims to connect climate ambitions to farmers' actions. As international experts, we bring our experience from various countries and climates to develop agroforestry in the Mediterranean.
